The Diary of Ebeneazer Scrooge during “The Pandemic”

Preface

Entry 1

I Ebenezer Scrooge am writing this as documentation of the bitter end of my problems. I write this in relation to the plague that is beginning to sweep through England. The month of December has just begun and with it comes the wretched Christmas Spirit.

Entry 2

It is now December 6th and the plague has come quicker than anticipated. I hope to be safe from the disease with my exclusion from society. The poor I hate so much continue foolishly work knowing they will contract the disease just as I predicted. The people of London can only see this plague as a horror and not a revival. They do not see that this will hopefully solve overpopulation, that this can boost the economy, that there will be more food on everyone’s plate after this plague.

Entry 3

I believe Ebenezer Scrooge was a cold calculated man who “wish to be left alone” (Dickens 268). Not only that I also believe he was in pain from his sad upbringing. Combined is the reasoning behind his dark ideal to “decrease the surplus population” (Dickens 268) of the poor. This led me to think that though a pandemic would most definitely hurt business, Scrooge would determine the benefits are better in the long run. I decided to have this pandemic take place prior to his contact to the spirits due to it providing a more interesting point of view.

The date is December 10th, today I went out in dire need of sustenance. I have been rationing my food carefully however I can only go so long without re-supplying. The markets are just as populated as prior to the plague but now body’s lay on the street with no acknowledgement. Food is sparse in the market with the majority of people begging for the final scraps. What is there has been priced accordingly to a higher cost. I had to spend more than I wanted on food but it is a necessity. Traveling back I experienced a multitude of beggars all crasping for my supplies. My only worry is that I myself may have contracted the disease.

Entry 4

It is December 20th and the plague is at its peak. I have not left my abode since the last entry. In the nights I can see carriages picking up the dead on the street. I suspect the majority of the dead to be the poor. If this be in fact true then the surplus population is rapidly decreasing with the plague. I am becoming increasingly bothered by beggars at my door trying to get me to let them in.

Entry 5

The date is December 24th. I have always disliked Christmas. It always reminds me of the joy I never had growing up. However this is a Christmas I could come to like. Celebrations and feast are near non-existent and in a month or two the world will reopen. Though I enjoy the peace and quiet of this plague and have a bitter taste for the world returning to its normal state there is a necessity for it to reopen. Only this time it will reopen in a better place. Population will be down, the economy will regrow rapidly, more food will be on everyone’s plate, and most importantly I will be making more money.
